IBM Ties HP in Q4, Posts Largest Growth in 2002

IBM climbed to the top in worldwide disk storage systems factory revenue with 25 percent of that revenue in the fourth quarter of 2002, tying HP in this segment. IBM also grew its disk revenues by 34 percent in the fourth quarter as compared to the previous quarter -- more than any other reported vendor -- according to IDC's Worldwide Quarterly Storage Tracker, which was released today.

Additionally, according to IDC's Worldwide Quarterly Storage Tracker, IBM had the largest disk revenue growth, year-to-year, among the Top Five vendors with 15 percent revenue growth, accounting for 20 percent of worldwide revenue share in 2002. Dell was second at 13 percent growth in this segment. The combined HP and Compaq declined 14% in revenue year-to-year. EMC declined 37% in revenue year-to-year.

EMC Was #1 2002 Supplier Of Networked Storage/External RAID

EMC Corporation was the world's #1 provider of networked information storage (Open SAN and NAS) and external RAID systems once again in 2002, according to new market share data released recently by research firm IDC(1). The findings also show EMC gained market share in the fourth quarter of 2002 to finish the year as the revenue leader in both the networked storage and external RAID systems markets.

According to IDC, EMC led the growing networked storage market with 30.1% revenue share in 2002, gaining market share in the fourth quarter. EMC's networked storage market share was more than 50% higher than #2 Hewlett-Packard's share in 2002, and all other suppliers were below 10% share. Networked storage accounted for 54% of all external RAID revenue in 2002, reported IDC, as customers deployed more networked-attached storage (NAS) and open storage area networks (SAN) than direct-attached storage (DAS) systems for the first time.

For the sixth consecutive year, EMC also led the external RAID storage market in 2002 with 20.1% revenue share(2). EMC's external RAID revenue grew nearly 22% from the third quarter to the fourth quarter, according to IDC. External RAID storage includes all controller-based disk storage systems that are not embedded inside servers.

According to IDC, EMC also led the external RAID controller-based storage market for both Unix and Windows NT/2000 in 2002, with 23% and 22% revenue shares, respectively. External RAID controller-based storage revenue for Unix and Windows NT/2000 represented a combined 78% of the total external RAID storage market in 2002.
