MOTOROLA NET PROCESSORS DRIVE MaXXan NET STORAGE SERVICES

Motorola Inc announced recently that its C-5 network processors are being used in MaXXan Systems' recently announced storage area network (SAN) intelligent switching platform, the MXV320. The MXV320 is a new generation of SAN switching products capable of delivering higher-level storage application functions as services of the network.

"We chose Motorola's C-5 network processor because of its programmability and ability to support flexible implementations of higher level storage services," said Jeff Silva, co-founder and vice president of marketing for MaXXan. "By developing our MXV320 around the C-5 network processor we were able to leverage Motorola's investments in NP technology and deliver the performance required for storage networking environments without making heavy investments in ASICs. Our customers will benefit from extended product lives through software upgradeable application services and features."

The MaXXan MXV320 incorporates Motorola's C-5 network processors at the line interfaces, offering an environment for migrating functionality into the SAN infrastructure itself rather than keeping it in the server, appliance or storage controller. MaXXan customers are able to independently and dynamically configure Fibre Channel (FC) ports as Gigabit Ethernet ports for FC over IP connections and to trunk any number of ports together to form large virtual connections across long distances. The C-5 network processors can be updated through software downloads, which enables them to support new services as required by MaXXan's customers.

The MaXXan MXV320 also incorporates the PowerPC host processors from Motorola on the control cards as the central CPU, as well as on each line card with the C-5 network processors where they serve as part of a distributed management and control architecture.

The programmable, highly available, and scalable MaXXan MXV320 is currently shipping for customer field trials.
