NEW EMC AUTOMATED NETWORKED STORAGE GAINS TRACTION IN Q1

Organizations around the world are embracing EMC's broad new portfolio of automated networked storage solutions to reduce information technology costs, manage complexity and protect their information. In announcing financial results for the first quarter of 2003, EMC Corporation has highlighted a sampling of customer wins achieved during the three-month period as tangible evidence of the information storage leader's growing momentum.

EMC's new Symmetrix DMX series of high-end networked storage systems, introduced on February 3, 2003, gained strong initial traction, representing more than half of total first-quarter Symmetrix systems sales in its first two months of general availability. EMC's CLARiiON CX series of networked storage systems and software, introduced in the third quarter of 2002, continued to achieve strong growth, driving approximately 10% sequential growth for the overall CLARiiON line of products (compared with the fourth quarter of 2002). EMC's multiplatform software portfolio, including the ControlCenter family of management software, is bringing customers unprecedented flexibility and efficiency across multivendor networked storage environments. EMC Centera Content Addressed Storage (CAS), introduced one year ago, continued to be EMC's fastest-growing major product line. EMC shipped more than two petabytes (2,000 terabytes) of Centera systems to customers in the first quarter.

David Goulden, EMC's Executive vice president of Global Marketing and New Business Development, said, "We finished the first quarter with the broadest, most extensive product lineup in the industry's history. As these examples illustrate, our customers are most enthused about the breadth of our portfolio. They no longer want to buy storage point products, and they are looking to EMC to address their end-to-end automated networked storage requirements."

Customers investing in EMC's new automated networked storage solutions during the first quarter included:

  • U.S. Air Force Reserve Command (AFRC) purchased 28 terabytes of the new EMC Symmetrix DMX to support its server consolidation and disaster recovery plans. AFRC also purchased Celerra Network Servers and the EMC ControlCenter family of open management software, which will be implemented by EMC Global Services.
  • American Family Insurance, one of the largest mutual property/casualty insurance companies in the U.S., purchased EMC Symmetrix DMX and CLARiiON CX networked storage systems. It also purchased the new EMC Centera CE (Compliance Edition) to support its regulatory e-mail retention requirements. In addition, American Family Insurance invested in EMC SRDF software to consolidate and protect information for applications residing on HP, Sun, Dell and IBM Unix, NT and mainframe-based servers.
  • Baden Wurttembergische Bank AG, a leading commercial bank in Germany, purchased two EMC Symmetrix DMX1000 systems, the EMC ControlCenter family of management software for SAN consolidation and EMC replication software, SRDF and TimeFinder, for business continuity.
  • Bank of America Card Services purchased more than 45 terabytes of EMC CLARiiON CX600 networked storage systems for its DataMart environment. The division chose CLARiiON for its outstanding performance and value, and will use EMC's Navisphere management software to monitor, manage and report on the CX600 systems.
  • Fiducia AG of Germany, an IT service provider with a special focus on financial services, purchased 20 terabytes of Symmetrix DMX2000 and the EMC ControlCenter family of management software for its banking, e-banking and e-mail applications.
  • FiServ, a leading service provider for the financial industry, purchased 50 terabytes of EMC Centera content-addressed storage to support the 115 million check images it processes each month supporting over 700 banks across the United States. Centera will serve as the online archive for FiServ's check imaging service.
  • Orange Switzerland, a leading provider of mobile communications services, purchased two Centera content-addressed storage systems for e-mail and database archiving.
  • Nationwide, one of the United Kingdom's largest mortgage lenders, and retail banking, saving and lending organizations, purchased EMC Symmetrix DMX to support an ongoing business continuity project. EMC Symmetrix DMX will consolidate a number of servers, providing Nationwide with advanced connectivity, increased capacity and ease of management.
  • Warner Music Group, a leading global music company, purchased 10 terabytes of CLARiiON CX600 networked storage with ATA and EMC Navisphere, SnapView and PowerPath storage management software to support WMG's online marketing initiative. The company also acquired an additional three terabytes of CLARiiON with ATA to add to an existing CLARiiON CX600 system with Fibre Channel drives to bring more of its music assets online for consumer download.
