LSI Logic Integrated Striping Ultra320 SCSI Solution Ships

LSI Logic Corporation announced recently that its Ultra320 SCSI Integrated Striping hardware RAID solution is now available and shipping worldwide. Dell Precision workstations are first to offer the LSI Logic Integrated Striping product. Professional users who demand exceptional performance and scalability for workstation applications including digital content creation, CAD/CAE, GIS, software development and financial analysis, benefit from the faster data retrieval provided by Integrated Striping and enabled by the LSI Logic Fusion-MPT intelligent architecture.

LSI Logic was chosen to supply the Ultra320 SCSI IC solution for Dell's Precision 650 workstation, and Ultra320 SCSI host bus adapter (HBA) solutions for Dell Precision 450 and 350 desktop workstations. Dell Precision workstations are now shipping worldwide.

"Providing value and functionality in the competitive workstation market is key to growing market share," said Mark Margevicius, research director, Gartner. "In order to stay competitive and meet market demand, workstation manufacturers must integrate and embrace the latest solutions for enhancing performance."

Worldwide, the top five workstation market suppliers shipped more than 1.4 million units in 2002, according to a Gartner Dataquest January 2003 market alert report. In Q4 2002, Dell was noted as having 44.7 percent market share, up 18.7 percent from Q4 2001. Following Dell, in order of market penetration, were HP, IBM, Sun and Fujitsu Siemens. Together these five OEMs supply 94 percent of the high-performance desktop workstations worldwide.

Integrated Striping, also known as "RAID 0," is an advanced scheme for data storage that stripes information over multiple drives to deliver the highest level of performance. The LSI Logic Fusion-MPT (Message Passing Technology) architecture enables the intelligent, hardware RAID Integrated Striping solution. Fusion-MPT delivers extremely high levels of I/O performance using industry standard ARM processor technology. In addition to a stripping solution, LSI Logic offers Integrated Mirroring (IM) for data protection capability for up to six drives. A hardware RAID solution protects against data loss due to software crashes as often occurs with a software or hybrid software/hardware RAID 0 product.

LSI Logic offers a complete family of Ultra320 SCSI controllers and HBAs for workstation and enterprise server markets. The Ultra320 SCSI solutions double the bandwidth and more than doubles performance compared to Ultra160, the current SCSI generation. LSI Logic was first-to-market with Ultra320 SCSI technology and commands more than 65% Ultra320 market share.

LSI Logic Storage Components Group supplies a full spectrum of ASICs, ICs, storage and RAID adapters and bus expanders worldwide for such interface technologies as SCSI, Fibre Channel, SATA, iSCSI and Serial Attached SCSI. Products are sold to all major OEMs and to the Channel through distribution partners such as Arrow Electronics, Avnet, Bell Microproducts, Ingram-Micro, Insight Electronics, Synnex and Tech Data.
