NETSPACE LAUNCHES HIPAA-COMPLIANT BackVault 2.8

Netspace, the Miami-based developer of smart digital solutions and provider of these solutions to Netspace Internet consultancies in the U.S. and U.K., has launched BackVault 2.8, a powerful Web-based remote file-sharing, retrieval and back-up storage program, to support the federal standard for electronic transactions detailed in HIPAA, The Health Insurance Portability & Accountability Act of 1996, announced Netspace president and CEO Elliot Krasnow.

An upgrade of BackVault, which was introduced in April, 2003, BackVault 2.8 is a triple-encrypted version of the Web-based program which offers multiple layers of security and leading edge back-up capabilities. BackVault 2.8 enables health professionals or medical offices to store, retrieve and back-up patient records in a remote, on-line location while meeting stringent HIPAA-compliant standards governing security of electronic transactions.

The original BackVault program uses the U.S. Government's Data Encryption Standard (DES) algorithm to protect files which are being viewed or shared on-line, downloaded or backed-up. BackVault 2.8 goes one step further by deploying DataFort E440, a robust encryption security appliance developed by California-based Decru, in its server environment.

DataFort E440 ensures that files are encrypted three times with the powerful DES encryption algorithm. Decru's DataFort E440 security appliance provides BackVault 2.8 users with layered security, combining hardware-based encryption, authentication and intelligent key management to create a powerful security solution that is easy to use and manage.

"In addition to medical professionals, BackVault is ideal for bankers, financial professionals, lawyers, engineers and architects who need to access, share and strictly protect large, sensitive files," said Krasnow.

BackVault 2.8 stores files on special remote servers - separate from the Netspace servers used to host client websites -- and employs best practices in its firewall and access control systems. BackVault 2.8 uses a multi-layer security model, emphasizing secure physical server environments as well as redundancy over multiple digital sites. Backup power supplies allow systems to function independently of the power grid for more than 45 days, and only limited IP addresses are exposed over the Internet. Files remain encrypted at all times on BackVault 2.8's servers and can only be decrypted when downloaded and saved by a subscriber.

"Overall, we feel that BackVault 2.8 maintains the highest level of security in the industry and a disaster prevention standard that assures protection of our customers' data while it is in our care," said Krasnow.
