Features - Storage Innovations:

LSI LOGIC STORAGE SYSTEMS TURNS UP THE VOLUME

LSI Logic Storage Systems, a leader in delivering technology that enables high performance, highly scalable storage for the open enterprise, introduced SANtricity Storage Manager 8.40 software, with a new Volume Copy feature that gives end users better utilization of stored data and firmware enhancements that significantly improve performance.

The manipulation and analysis of information is often vital to a company's success. Volume Copy creates a complete duplicate, or clone, of a data volume within a storage system for backup, application testing or development, information analysis or data mining. It can also be used to redistribute data -- moving volumes from older, slower disk drives to newer, faster or higher capacity drives -- to optimize performance, storage density, capacity utilization and security.

Existing LSI Logic storage technology customers can realize performance boosts of up to 70 percent by simply upgrading to SANtricity 8.40. Its firmware enhancements deliver improved IOPS performance to transaction-based applications and more throughput to bandwidth-intensive applications.

"With the introduction of SANtricity 8.40, we have made our storage management software for administering LSI Logic storage systems even more powerful," said Steve Gardner, director of product marketing for LSI Logic Storage Systems. "We're proud to be delivering potent software that provides storage administrators with all the tools they need to assure that their company's storage strategy can support its business strategy."

Other new features that deliver an even higher return on investments in LSI Logic storage technology:

  • SCSI-3 Persistent Reservations support that enables storage systems from LSI Logic to integrate with multi-node, or cluster solutions -- such as Oracle Real Application Cluster and VERITAS Database Edition/Advance Cluster -- that use shared volumes for increased data availability, scalability and performance.
  • 256 volumes per partition -- allows the storage system to present up to 256 host-addressable Logical Unit Numbers (LUNs) to a given host port to provide support for large databases, greater connectivity and capacity for SAN environments and more room for snapshot and clone volumes.
  • Support for more hosts -- LSI Logic Storage Systems dual-controller 5884 and 4884 systems will now support up to 512 concurrent Fibre Channel logins enabling more host-to-storage I/O paths for storage consolidation or clustering environments.
