VXA Packet Tape Drives To Be In SynerBox Backup Appliance

Continuing momentum with its VXA product line, Exabyte Corporation, a performance and value leader in tape backup systems, announced that SynerWay, a France-based manufacturer of small to medium-scale storage systems, has chosen Exabyte's VXA-2 Packet Tape Drives for its newest line of SynerBox backup appliances. This announcement marks the ninth OEM win for Exabyte's VXA-2 Packet Drive in less than a year.

The SynerBox TX-series integrates internal VXA-1 or VXA-2 Packet Tape Drives and will allow backup on both disk and tape using an asynchronous mirror mechanism, thus affording manipulation error tolerance. In an un-mirrored mode, the SynerBox TX 120 with its integrated VXA-2 Packet Drive provides up to 480GB of backup storage on disk before having to load the tape cartridge, which offers the greatest storage capacity for a single tape drive solution available on the market.

VXA-2 Packet Tape Drives provide two to four times the capacity, twice the data transfer rates and dramatically higher data reliability than DDS and other similar tape products ­- all at a comparable or lower price. The VXA-2 Packet Drive is designed to deliver a native capacity of up to 80GB and a compressed capacity of up to 160GB at a sustained transfer rate of up to 12 MB/sec, while maintaining full read and write compatibility with the first generation VXA-1 tape drive. The drive's SCSI Ultra 2 Low Voltage Differential (LVD) interface, the standard in peripheral connection, attaches to either LVD or single-ended SCSI host interfaces. In addition, several lengths of VXA tape cartridges and a cleaning cartridge are also available, allowing customers to select a cartridge native capacity from 20GB to 80GB. This cartridge capacity range allows users to select a cartridge to meet their exact storage needs for better control over their cost of ownership.
