Informix Spatial DataBlade Simplifies Complex Data Analysis
Through Advanced Three-Dimensional Views

Informix Corporation, a provider of enterprise database-powered solutions, has announced new DataBlade technology designed to help application developers quickly transform complex spatial data objects into three-dimensional views. This means users can now analyze and manipulate valuable data that would otherwise be difficult to uncover. Called the Formida Fire Spatial DataBlade module, the new product was created by Formida Software Corporation as a module for Informix Dynamic Server with Universal Data Option. Fire Spatial DataBlade module was unveiled at the annual Informix Worldwide User Conference held in Seattle.
The new Fire Spatial DataBlade module enables organizations to further enhance business intelligence by providing a facility for better quantitative analysis and decision-making that is easy to understand and interpret. DataBlade modules are high-performance extensions to Informix Dynamic Server that have the ability to handle multiple data types, functions and indexing methods.
"The Fire Spatial DataBlade module is an exciting extension to the functionality of Informix Dynamic Server," said Dan Leighton, executive director of product management at Informix. "The visualization feature offers Informix customers a new dimension to the data residing in Informix databases, underscoring significant -- even critical -- relationships within sets of data that could otherwise have been difficult to determine."
Visual representation of spatial data objects -- points, lines, polygons, or geometric functions -- can prove invaluable in a wide range of business processes. Asset management, for example, can be streamlined when essential spatial data about equipment footprints or the topography of installation locations is presented visually. Service providers can improve customer care by visually determining patterns of customer difficulties, providing a quicker and more cost-effective response. Fraud management also can be enhanced by the visual views of the data, since geographical representation of security breaches or fraudulent activities can simplify analysis and resolution of these problems.
"Users of the Informix Dynamic Server with Universal Data Option will realize tremendous benefits by visualizing spatial data in their corporate databases," stated Tom Richards, vice president of marketing at Formida Software. "The Fire Spatial DataBlade module coupled with Informix Dynamic Server with Universal Data Option is the perfect solution in providing the ability to build integrated, spatial information management applications for better, more effective decisions at all levels."
Informix Dynamic Server with Universal Data Option is a fully extensible object-relational database. It has the capability to manage any type of information or business logic in a single, integrated system, enabling a new class of innovative business applications.
Projected for commercial availability in October, the Fire Spatial DataBlade module will run initially on the Windows NT 4.0, Solaris 2.5.1 and SGI-IRIX 6.2 platforms. Initially, the U.S. list price for an enterprise application of the DataBlade module will start at $20,000, and is determined on a per processor basis. Discounted pricing is also available for resellers and distributors.
