WALKLETT GROUP ANNOUNCES DATA WAREHOUSING
PROJECT WITH PJM INTERCONNECTION, LLC
Walklett Group has announced that they are building a market information data warehouse (referred to as the PJM Information Warehouse) for PJM Interconnection, LLC -- the largest electrical control area in North America and the third largest in the world, providing electricity to nearly 23 million people in all or parts of five states and the District of Columbia.
"To continue creating a robust, competitive, and non-discriminatory electric power market, PJM is committed to building the PJM Information Warehouse to support our business community's needs," said PJM's Vice President of Market Services, Ken Laughlin. "The PJM Information Warehouse will give PJM the ability to capitalize on the changing business environment characterized by emerging electric markets and constantly changing control area operations. Furthermore, it will help ensure that PJM is meeting customer needs and maintaining the reliability of the electric power systems in all the markets we serve."
The way that PJM's data is currently stored makes it difficult to perform Business Intelligence analysis. The initial phase of the Warehouse, however, will give the business community the ability to quickly and easily access their data from many different points of view and from various dimensions. Therefore, the PJM Information Warehouse will provide a common information infrastructure for PJM's information analysis needs.
"Specifically, the PJM Information Warehouse will address PJM's Energy Market and Control Area Operations needs," explained Mark Gravener, engineer, Planning and Performance Department. "In particular, it will assess our Control Area's operations compliance with industry standards and with PJM's operations and reliability standards. Additionally, the Information Warehouse will monitor PJM's Energy Market to identify anomalous market behaviors, and will publish the operational data of PJM's Energy Market and Control area for the use of market participants." Gravener is working with Group Leader, Systems Programming, Roy Niemann, to manage the project.
"This Data Warehouse project marks Walklett Group's entrance into the utility industry, and we are extremely pleased to be entering this industry with an international leader like PJM," said Walklett Group's President, Thomas J. Walklett, Jr. "This project will be a collaborative effort between Walklett Group and PJM, and our respective expertise should yield a Data Warehouse that will help PJM achieve their strategic objectives."
Walklett Group will work with PJM to refine and validate the requirements of the PJM Information Warehouse; spearhead the detailed and technical design; implement the Warehouse; and manage the analysis, the modeling and the quality assurance planning. The initial project team consists of eight Walklett Group Business Intelligence consultants.
PJM is the largest electrical control area in North America, providing reliable electricity to customers in all or parts of five states and the District of Columbia. Nearly 23 million people are served by PJM members. The PJM control area coordinates the operation of 8,000 miles of bulk power transmission lines and 540 generating units providing over 56,000 megawatts of capacity.
