Compaq Announces New NonStop Himalaya Solution Server for DSS
ACTION ITEMS
Compaq Computer has announced the new NonStop Himalaya Solution Server for Decision Support Systems (DSS Server). DSS Server is a packaged solution that incorporates NonStop Himalaya servers and the software needed for DSS environments. It is a highly scalable system that is specifically designed for customers with mid- to large-scale DSS requirements, in the range of 250 gigabytes to one terabyte. Priced competitively with UNIX system-based solutions, DSS Server delivers a flexible, growth-oriented environment that reduces decision support life-cycle costs and improves the customer's return on investment.
DSS Server incorporates the same NonStop Himalaya technology that has recently won recognition from major industry groups. In July, the DCI Data Warehouse World conference awarded Compaq the prestigious 1998 Excellence in Business Information Award for its data warehouse at the USAA Casualty Indemnity Company, http://www.tandem.com/pres--rel/dcaawapl/dcaawapl.htm In June, the Data Warehousing Institute conferred its 1998 Best Practices Award on Dayton Hudson Corporation for its NonStop Himalaya server-based data warehouse, one of the largest in the world, http://www.tandem.com/pres--rel/vldbawpl/vldbawpl.htm
Compaq's DSS Server leverages key advantages of NonStop Himalaya server's parallel architecture. Its scalability enables customers to grow their DSS environments seamlessly and without disruptive application changes or forklift upgrades. The 24 x 7 availability of NonStop Himalaya servers reduces costly downtime and enhances the effectiveness of many applications, such as marketing automation, claims analysis and micromerchandising.
NonStop Himalaya server's inherent manageability advantage plus the advanced query features of the parallel NonStop SQL database combine to significantly reduce staffing administration costs. Dave Russell, NonStop products marketing manager, Compaq, said, "DSS Server is the first of a series of new products that underscore Compaq's commitment to drive NonStop Himalaya servers into new application areas. Himalaya systems already run many of the largest DSS environments in the world. Now, with DSS Server, customers with smaller databases can deploy industry-leading DSS technology with the assurance they can scale up easily to accommodate growth. DSS applications are typically high growth and require the kind of availability and scalability that NonStop Himalaya systems have been delivering for many years. Now, DSS Server gives customers that same NonStop server performance, in an attractively priced package."
The DSS Server includes 250-gigabyte, 500-gigabyte, or one-terabyte configurations, with four, eight, or sixteen S70000 processors, respectively. DSS Server includes key software needed to build a DSS environment: DataLoader and Storage Management Foundation (SMF). NonStop ODBC Server, which provides open database connectivity, and the NonStop SQL database are sold separately on a per-user license basis. DSS Server is available immediately.
The DSS Server solution provides high-end DSS technology to customers with smaller databases and enables them to scale up easily. In addition, several key benefits are designed to contribute to a return on investment that is one of the industry's best for large DSS systems: low initial purchase price, low administrative costs, and low system downtime. Downtime is costly, and DSS Server's fault-tolerant NonStop technology reduces downtime to almost zero. Similarly, DSS Server's NonStop technology reduces operations and staffing requirements.
