SEQUENT AND PARTNERS TEST NEXT GENERATION DATA CENTER SOLUTIONS

Sequent Computer Systems, Inc., a leader in Intel-based data center solutions, together with over a dozen partners, has unveiled its Enterprise Solutions Center (ESC), a proofing and demo center for next generation data center solutions with over $15 million in dedicated systems. An initiative of Sequent's Solution Integration Group, the ESC provides real world proofing and characterization of large-scale multi-vendor solutions running on NUMA-Q systems and NUMACenter environments. The ESC will also host solution demos and proofing exercises that will be accessible to customers and partners worldwide via Sequent's Intranet.

"As enterprise solutions utilize a growing number of complex components from different vendors, integration issues become even more critical to customer success. The ESC is part of a commitment to offer the highest level of solution integration, particularly for new Web-enabled and mixed UNIX and Windows NT environments on Sequent systems," said Steve Statler, senior director of Sequent's Solution Integration Group.

"Testing complex multi-vendor configurations under extreme work loads allows Sequent to offer a level of certainty about system sizing, performance and availability that's unique. In combination with our Application Advantage and Decision Advantage methodologies we will significantly reduce risk and speed deployment for our integrator and end user customers."

"Sequent has worked with Intel to deliver data center solutions to Fortune 1000 organizations for more than a decade. The Enterprise Solution Center represents a unique level of commitment to ensure successful deploymentof next generation solutions on the Intel architecture regardless of whether they run on UNIX, Windows NT or leverage Internet technologies," said Scott Richardson, director of enterprise programs, Enterprise Server Group of the Intel Corporation.

The Enterprise Solution Center initially features a series of comprehensive demos and proofing systems. These include e-commerce and data mining/fraud detection solutions; system back-up and availability demonstrations; and a 10 terabyte data warehouse. The ESC includes an operational NUMACenter environment, NUMA-Q systems, and key hardware and software contributions from partners including: The BaaN Company, BEA Systems, Inc., BMC, Brocade Communications, Business Objects, Cisco Systems, CLARiiON, Computer Associates, EMC Corporation, Exide Electronics, Informix Software, Inc., Micron, Microsoft Corporation, Oracle Corporation, PeopleSoft, Inc., SAP AG, Storage Technology Corporation, and Tivoli.

"As a market leader in distributed mission-critical middleware solutions for the world's largest enterprises, BEA strengthens Sequent's enterprise offering by enabling applications to work with performance and reliability across mixed environments," said Ed Scott, executive vice president of worldwide field operations for BEA Systems, Inc. "Sequent's new Enterprise Solution Center demonstrates the importance Sequent places on providing the highest levels of solution integration in mixed environments."

"CLARiiON full Fibre Channel disk arrays, combined with Sequent's NUMA-Q servers, deliver a proven record of performance for the largest, most I/O intensive workloads in complex, mission-critical computing environments," said Joel Schwartz, senior vice president and general manager of CLARiiON. "Our strategic partnership with Sequent and its choice to include CLARiiON in its Enterprise Solutions Center, demonstrate our shared commitment to meet increasing customer demand for more scalable and highly available, UNIX and NT solutions."

Sequent has claimed to be the world's fastest-growing server vendor with systems priced between $100K and $1M in 1997 on the strength of NUMA-Q 2000, and has been the number one vendor of high-end UNIX servers in the UK for the past seven years, according to IDC. Sequent supports more than 10,000 installations worldwide, including many of the world's largest and most sophisticated OLTP, DSS and RDBMS applications.
