Oracle Corp. has announced that it has increased its market share lead over Microsoft in relational database software for Windows NT, according to the latest research data published by International Data Corporation (IDC). In addition to remaining "the runaway leader in RDBMS license sales on UNIX," Oracle increased its database license revenue share lead over Microsoft by 5.3 percentage points, for a total share of 35.7%, IDC reports. During the, same period, Microsoft's share declined to 30.4%. From 1996 to 1997, Oracle's NT database license revenues grew 30.5% more than Microsoft's, while its unit shipments increased by 77.8%, a full 21.1% more than Microsoft SQL Server during the same period.
In a separate report by AMR Research, Inc., Oracle was also shown to have increased its majority share of the market for databases that run enterprise resource planning (ERP) applications by 4%. More than 52% of database license revenues within the ERP market went to Oracle in 1997, according to AMR, compared to just 5% for Microsoft SQL Server. AMR estimated the total database market for ERP applications in 1997 was $5.1 billion.
"When it comes to choosing a database to run your mission critical ERP applications, the trend is clear," said Mark Jarvis, Oracle's senior vice president of worldwide marketing. "The world's most popular database -- Oracle -- is overwhelmingly the choice of Windows NT users." The two reports, "Oracle Tops 1997 NT RDBMS Revenue" and the "Enterprise Resource Planning Software Report, 1997-2002," are available from IDC in Framingham, Mass., and Boston-based AMR Research, respectively.
