SAS Institute Elevates OLE DB for OLAP to the
Enterprise
ACTION ITEMS
SAS Institute Inc., a market leader in integrated data warehousing and decision support, has announced the Beta release of its OLE DB for OLAP server solution, which runs against the SAS hybrid OLAP (HOLAP) engine across its enterprise servers.
It gives access from any compliant OLE DB for OLAP client (such as Excel, Knosys, and SAS Institute's OLAP viewers), against SAS MDDBs. Any part of these MDDBs can be deployed across NT and UNIX Servers -- in any combination of SAS datasets and other DBMS tables (ORACLE, Sybase, etc.). The OLE DB for OLAP driver will be available as production by the end of 1998. The OLE DB for OLAP solution is available free of charge to current SAS/MDDB customers.
SAS/MDDB Server software, was the first commercial OLAP server to demonstrate support for the Microsoft-defined OLE DB for OLAP interface. SAS/MDDB Server software supports OLAP providers on all major platforms, including Windows NT, UNIX, and mainframes. "This strategy makes a lot of sense for SAS Institute, and has potential for great benefit to customers," said Bob Moran, director of decision support research at the Aberdeen Group. "Now, the SAS data warehouse becomes accessible from popular desktop tools. Openness and multiplatform support will provide customers with lots of choices."
SAS Institute understands that data warehousing is about making organized data along with decision support tools available to the end users. Data warehouses, optimized for decision support, give business users a focused picture of information previously dispersed across the enterprise. SAS Institute has been the central figure in decision support and data management from the beginning, users turn to SAS software to makes these processes extremely efficient and maximizes performance. And because SAS software is an open, end-to-end solution, organizations can easily integrate existing systems while still benefiting from methodologies only available from a vendor that is familiar with the entire process. SAS Institute also can assist customers with OLAP/HOLAP implementations.
According to Mark Moorman, SAS Institute program manager for business intelligence. "Our support for the OLE DB for OLAP interface on UNIX and Windows NT machines gives customers a wide range of choices for client access to the data warehousing power of SAS(R) software. Data warehousing, data mining, and OLAP technology provide powerful tools for high-end decision support systems. With the scalable server and the OLE DB for OLAP API, we are attacking on two fronts; more data, and more consumers, supported via SAS/IntrNet Web enablement."
