ANALYSIS & COMMENTARY

DATA MINING FOR ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT
by Amit Roy

This week, executive editor at large Dr. Inderpal Bhandari presents a column by Amit Roy. Dr. Roy is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Environmental and Community Medicine at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. His areas of expertise include mathematical modeling of biological and environmental systems, and exposure assessment. He is particularly interested in the mathematical description of entire exposure pathways, which begins with release of contaminants into environmental media (such as air, groundwater, surface water, or soil), followed by transport and transformation of contaminants in the media, and culminates in the uptake of contaminants by biological receptors. He received his Ph.D. in Chemical and Biochemical Engineering from Rutgers University, NJ in 1997, prior to which he earned a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and a B.Sc. (Honors) in Chemistry from the University of Delhi, New Delhi, India.

Dr. Roy observes: "It is evident from the articles that have appeared in previous issues of DS* that data mining has begun to have an impact on several diverse areas of management in the commercial world -- ranging from industrial management to strategy in professional sports. This suggests that data mining is a general-purpose tool that could be profitably applied to non-commercial human endeavors as well. This article explores the potential applications of data mining to environmental management."
