Computer Associates International, Inc. (CA) and the West McLaren Mercedes Formula One Team, which used CA's Unicenter TNG technology in the 1998 Formula 1 World Championship, have extended their unique technology partnership.

Unicenter TNG provides the West McLaren Mercedes Formula One Team with a powerful software tool by allowing them to rapidly analyze the vast amount of data generated by the racing car's telemetry systems during the course of a Grand Prix or test period. The successful use of CA's acclaimed enterprise management solution in such an innovative setting dramatizes the robustness of Unicenter TNG technology, as well as its broad potential applicability to business challenges beyond conventional IT.

"We're delighted by the contribution Unicenter TNG has made to the success of one of the world's most famous Grand Prix teams," said Jay Huff, CA's European director of advanced technology. "This is an outstanding example of how Unicenter TNG's intelligence and power can be used to address a virtually limitless range of operational issues."

In addition to West McLaren Mercedes winning the 1998 Constructors' World Championship, driver Mika Hakkinen took the Drivers' World title.

"Victories in F1 are the result of effectively dealing with a massive number of variables," said Ron Dennis, group managing director of TAG McLaren. "Thanks to CA and our technology partnership, the team was able to complement our racing knowledge with a superior solution for data management. With the renewal of our partnership with CA, we have secured this critical edge."

By the start of next season, CA and McLaren also expect to enhance the development of an engineering application based around Jasmine, CA's object-oriented database for multimedia applications. The new Jasmine application will help McLaren analyze historical race and test data faster and more productively. TAG McLaren Marketing Services has already deployed a Jasmine-powered multimedia kiosk application.

McLaren also plans to look more closely at Neugents, CA's revolutionary neural network technology that allows Unicenter TNG to proactively manage the IT environment. Neugents' predictive management facilities offer McLaren the ability to detect faults in their high-performance vehicles before they occur.

"All Formula 1 teams have to exploit the full spectrum of technical know-how," explained Hakkinen. "But only a few choose to achieve a true winning partnership through advanced software development. Thanks to CA, McLaren is benefiting from industry-leading software technology that delivers data in an easy-to-manage format."

Computer Associates International, Inc., a world leader in mission-critical business computing, provides software, support and integration services in more than 100 countries around the world. CA has more than 13,000 employees and had revenue of $5.1 billion in calendar year 1998.
