NCR EXTENDS ITS LEAD IN DATA WAREHOUSING SOLUTIONS; UNVEILS PERFORMANCE-ENHANCING NEXT-GENERATION PLATFORMS

NCR Corporation underscored its leadership in Data Warehousing again with the introduction of two new performance-enhancing NCR WorldMark server platforms, part of the company's initial data warehouse offerings for the 21st century.

The new platforms -- the WorldMark 4800 and 5200 -- are designed to allow businesses to move their critical decision support systems seamlessly from entry-level to large-scale data warehousing, always benefiting from NCR's Teradata Warehouse solutions.

"The WorldMark 4800 and 5200 were created with our eyes clearly focused on the data warehousing demands of the next century," said Dan Harrington, vice president of marketing for NCR's National Accounts Solutions Group. "Driven by businesses' demands for applications such as Customer Relationship Management, data warehouses will grow even more rapidly in the future. These two new platforms offer the best of server technology with the ability to scale as quickly as a business' data warehousing needs inevitably expand."

According to Harrington, the guiding principle of NCR's data warehousing offerings for the 21st century is to deliver a cohesive, transparent and highly automated approach to managing and facilitating increasingly complex data warehousing needs throughout an organization.

"Companies are often overwhelmed by the rapid growth of their data warehouses," said Bob Moran, Vice President of Decision Support Research, at industry analyst firm Aberdeen Group, Inc. "NCR's new WorldMark 4800 and 5200 platforms, coupled with the Teradata database, were designed to give businesses the end-to-end (incremental) scalability they will need -- whether their data warehouse and/or data marts are 50 gigabytes or 100 terabytes."

Central to this are scalable platforms that serve as a foundation to support and enable business growth over a wide range of industries and business types. The WorldMark 4800 and 5200 provide the platform for NCR's flagship Teradata database and are the newest components in the company's portfolio of Data Warehouse solutions. The power of this combination is underscored by NCR's industry-leading TPC-D (Transaction Processing Council-Decision Support) benchmark results.

The new 4800/5200 servers will provide nearly a two-time system level performance improvement over the current generation of WorldMark servers, the 4700 and 5150. Along with performance gains, the just published TPC-D benchmarks demonstrate vastly improved power and price/performance as well. These latest record-breaking TPC-D benchmark results were achieved using an NCR Storage Cabinet (NSC), which is an advanced storage system specifically engineered for the rigorous demands of the data warehouse. The NSC is powered by technology from LSI Logic Storage Systems, Inc., an industry leader in scalable storage system solutions.

"NCR's Teradata Warehouse is a special blending of industry solutions, software, hardware and services that enable customers to realize a maximized return on investment," NCR's Harrington said. "With the WorldMark 4800 and 5200 as their data warehouse foundation, customers will experience a higher level of performance and even more costeffective solutions."

These new servers are based on the latest versions of Intel processing nodes for enterprise systems and enhancements to NCR's unique MPP (massively parallel processing) BYNET interconnect technology. Improvements to the I/O subsystems have been made to match those in processor and interconnect technology.

"Using the latest Intel high-end server technology, the Intel Pentium II XEON processors, these two new WorldMark platforms -- the 4800 and 5200 -- provide an unmatched foundation upon which businesses across all industries can build their critical decision support data warehouses," said Dave Cowen at Intel Corporation.

NCR's WorldMark 4800 will serve the needs of entry-level to mid-range data warehousing applications from 50 GB to up to 1TB. Customers choosing the 4800 will benefit from expansion capabilities, as well as the professional services and support assistance supplied by a large systems provider like NCR.

The WorldMark 5200 is intended to meet and exceed the requirements of large-scale data warehouses, with database capacities in the range of 600 GB to multi-terabytes. The new 5200 will become the new baseline in speed and performance in data warehouse solutions for the 21st century.

"These new WorldMark platforms, surrounded by exceptional software, professional counsel and services, will allow our customers to better turn data transactions into long-lasting and profitable relationships with their best customers," Harrington observed.
