Extending the power of its highly acclaimed visual data mining software to the broad base of Windows users, Silicon Graphics, Inc. has unveiled MineSet 3.0 Enterprise Edition at The Data Warehouse Institute's Fourth Annual Implementation Summit (booth #34) in Anaheim, Calif.

"MineSet has proven to be extraordinarily useful in solving critical business problems for Fortune 500 companies," said Ihab Abu-Hakima, vice president and general manager, Strategic Business Analysis Division, Silicon Graphics. "MineSet 3.0 Enterprise Edition builds on our strategy to help our customers accelerate their time to insight for strategic decision making, whether running UNIX or Windows."

Silicon Graphics MineSet software is widely used for customer relationship management, risk analysis, fraud management and bioinformatics by leading organizations worldwide. It integrates a complementary set of analytical and visualization tools that enable non-technical users in the financial services, communications, pharmaceuticals, retail and manufacturing industries to quickly identify new trends and critical patterns in data. By reducing complexity, employing visualization models, and easily depicting multidimensional data, MineSet empowers business users without requiring expertise in mathematics or statistics.

"By bringing the outstanding visualization and strong analytics of MineSet to Windows NT, SGI has given Windows NT users a welcome addition to their data mining tools. I expect this dual-platform strategy to greatly increase the popularity of MineSet among data miners," said Herb Edelstein, president of Two Crows Corporation.

Silicon Graphics' latest release of MineSet will further drive visual data mining into mainstream enterprise markets by providing the same functionality as MineSet software running on the company's robust IRIX (UNIX) operating system to Microsoft Windows users. MineSet 3.0 Enterprise Edition provides connectivity with all the leading Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) compatible databases including SQL Server, DB2, Oracle, Sybase and Informix. Also new on MineSet 3.0 Enterprise Edition, the visualization tools can easily be converted to ActiveX components, enabling independent software vendors (ISVs) and customers to create custom solutions running on the Windows platform.

"Monsanto recently began using MineSet 2.6 for genome research and we quickly realized its power for uncovering important relationships hidden in volumes of genetic data," said Richard Head, information technology scientist, Monsanto. "With the introduction of MineSet for Windows, we are looking to accelerate our knowledge discovery process by expanding the number of users from around 10 to, potentially, hundreds."

"MineSet 3.0 Enterprise Edition is an important evolutionary step for Silicon Graphics' visual data mining technology because it opens up new opportunities for companies like Acxiom to further develop and expand our database marketing solutions into new markets," said Andy Griebel, leader of integration services for AND, Acxiom Corporation. "In addition, new features such as easily communicable visualizations and platform flexibility will help to drive strategic decision support systems deeper into the enterprise."

Availability

MineSet 3.0 Enterprise Edition will be available in the summer 1999. MineSet clients are compatible with Windows NT, Windows 98, Windows 95 and IRIX and connect to servers running both Windows NT and IRIX. The Windows NT server offers all the functionality of the IRIX server except 64-bit support and parallelization, which are exclusive to Silicon Graphics IRIX platform-based Origin servers.
