NCR's Teradata Database Dominates Every Category
in Latest TPC-D
ACTION ITEMS
NCR Corporation has posted record-shattering performance results on a series of five TPC-D benchmarks, which raised the bar for next-generation data warehouse solutions. These latest Teradata TPC-D performance results -- run at 100 and 300 gigabytes, and one and three terabytes -- set new records at every data warehousing volume level in the well-respected industry benchmark.
In the one-terabyte (TB) test, Teradata's power metric (measurement of query processing power against large volumes of data) was greater than three times the recently published best result of Oracle8i, and almost 10 times greater than IBM's most recent results, at a better price/performance ratio than either competitor.
As businesses face increased competition in their marketplaces, timely analysis of detailed data is crucial for strategic corporate decision making. NCR's Teradata Warehouse solutions enable companies to quickly turn any amount of raw data into information that can be used to create more profitable customer relationships, as well as increase internal efficiencies.
"These latest benchmark results show why Teradata is the database of choice for companies who are serious about data warehousing," said Vickie Farrell, assistant vice president of Teradata marketing for NCR. "With Teradata, a business gets the best performance in the industry, as well as plenty of headroom for growth in query complexity, number of users, and data volume."
The new benchmark results were achieved using Teradata Version 2 Release 3 running on both an NCR WorldMark 4400 SMP server (100GB) and NCR WorldMark 5200 MPP configurations (300 GB, 1 TB, 3TB). The WorldMark servers each used four Intel Pentium II Xeon 450MHz CPUs and were configured with two gigabytes of memory.
Many NCR Teradata Warehouse customers are achieving a significant return on investment from their data warehouse, as well as a sustainable competitive advantage by analyzing detailed data. These leading-edge customers require new levels of database performance to do so.
"While other database vendors claim to enhance performance through 'new data warehousing features,' NCR's Teradata continues to demonstrate the enormous advantage of its fundamental parallel processing architecture," stated Farrell. "Meeting these increasingly complex business requirements is not a matter of checking the box on a list of database features, but rather the result of Teradata's inherent capability to efficiently partition data and perform all processing in parallel."

TPC Benchmark is a trademark of the Transaction Performance Council. The TPC believes that comparisons of TPC-D results measured against different database sizes are misleading and discourages such comparisons.
These benchmark results once again demonstrate the significant advantage of Teradata's patented parallel-processing technology for strategic business applications such as Data Warehousing and Customer Relationship Management.
Experience with successful real-world data warehouses confirms the irrelevance of zero-stream (single user) benchmarks. NCR is the only vendor that has run multiple streams (simulating multiple users) in every TPC-D benchmark. This is especially important as more data warehouses grow and move to Web-enabled access, potentially serving hundreds or even thousands of concurrent users. For companies planning aggressive data warehousing growth, no matter how small a project begins, this scalability protects their investment.
TPC-D benchmarks, which were created for customers' evaluation of database and platform performance, are run with business-oriented queries and update functions to simulate a decision support or data warehouse environment. The primary TPC-D benchmark metrics are Query Processing Power (QppD), Throughput (QthD), and Price/Performance ($/QphD). Optionally, vendors may choose to run multiple streams, which simulate multiple users running concurrent queries against the database. TPC-D is the most widely accepted industry benchmark for data warehousing.
About NCR's Teradata - the Industry's Leading Data Warehouse Engine
Helping businesses gain new insights, NCR's Teradata is the leading database with the power and performance to answer any question, on any data, at any time. Teradata provides industry-leading performance, unlimited scalability from 10 gigabytes to more than 100 terabytes, seamless mainframe connectivity and the lowest administration requirements of any database on the market.
