THE OBJECT PEOPLE ANNOUNCES THE GENERAL AVAILABILITY OF THE 2.O RELEASE OF TOPLINK FOR JAVA

The Object People, a leading international provider of products, education and services for object-oriented and distributed technologies, announces the general availability of the 2.0 release of TOPLink for Java. An advanced object/relational mapping tool, TOPLink is a transparent, non-intrusive, robust framework that facilitates access from Java to new and legacy data stored in relational databases.

"Enterprises are working aggressively to extend their applications across networks and the Web," says John Pugh, President of The Object People. "Java is helping to make this happen, but it's only one part of the solution. Equally important is mining and building on the wealth of corporate information and applications that use relational databases. With TOPLink for Java, we are offering a powerful solution for delivering mission-critical enterprise applications that both incorporate the advances that Java and distributed computing technologies provide, and exploit the investments made in corporate information systems that rely on relational database technology."

TOPLink's non-intrusive meta-data architecture and rich feature set have made it the leading object/relational mapping tool in the Java market. TOPLink for Java is used by Fortune 500 developers in more than 26 countries. TOPLink education and consulting services are delivered globally by The Object People and its partners and distributors.

"BEA believes that TOPLink for Java is a premier object/relational mapping product," says Scott Dietzen, CTO of WebXpress, a BEA company. "TOPLink's robust feature-set, performance enhancements, and customization options make it an excellent solution for enterprises that need a rich object/relational mapping layer to handle complex object models."

"TOPLink for Java has a very rich feature set and takes a non-intrusive approach to mapping objects," says Carl Parziale, Technical Advisor for First Union Bank. "Right out of the box, TOPLink addressed many issues for us and allowed us to focus on building our banking application instead of infrastructure. It has a lot of power and a lot of flexibility, and the technical support is outstanding. This is a mature product backed up by experienced, responsive staff."

"TOPLink is one of the most complete object/relational mapping products available in the marketplace today," says Joshua Duhl, industry analyst and President of Stillpoint Consulting. "Its extensive features make it the ideal solution for a wide range of usage scenarios, while its outstanding customization tools make it easy to fine-tune applications for optimum performance."

New features included in TOPLink for Java 2.0

Accepted as the object/relational mapping tool of choice for Java developers, TOPLink for Java is also a leading solution for Enterprise JavaBean persistence. TOPLink for Java v2.0 can be used under a Session bean architecture and has integrated support for JTS service and database connection pooling. TOPLink can also be used for Entity beans, while specialized products such as TOPLink for WebLogic provide advanced container managed persistence functionality.

TOPLink for Java v2.0 comes with a comprehensive feature set to support Java 2 (JDK 1.2) and JDBC 2.0, as well as a JDK 1.1.x-compatible version. With TOPLink for Java v2.0, developers can take full advantage of the enhancements in the Java language, including:

Other features in the 2.0 release of TOPLink for Java include:

Along with general improvements to reading, writing and units of work, many additional features have been added to optimize the performance of applications built with TOPLink, including:

This feature allows for complex three-tiered applications to be easily built without having to worry about complicated issues involved in distributing objects from the application server to the client. The Remote Session is a fully functional TOPLink session that can run on a three-tiered client. It can communicate to the server-side TOPLink session through either RMI or CORBA, and allows for full object replication and synchronization from the server to the client.

As the only object/relational mapping product to participate in the Oracle 8i program, many Oracle specific features have been added to TOPLink for Java 2.0. New mapping types have been added to support the object/relational extensions of Oracle 8i such as Varrays, object references, and structures. TOPLink has also been tested on the database server's Java virtual machine. TOPLink can be used for high performance server-side persistence under Oracle's CORBA and EJB component architecture or be called from complex Java stored procedures. Output cursors from Oracle stored procedures are also supported.

The TOPLink Builder development tool now supports many of the advanced features of TOPLink through its GUI interface. These features include customized SQL, interface descriptors, flexible instantiation and copy policies, null value defaults, and query key specification. "Accessing relational data; reducing the time and cost involved in developing new applications; incorporating advances in distributed computing technology to deploy applications across the Internet: these are major challenges facing Java developers today," says Dennis Leung, Director of Product Development for The Object People. "TOPLink is an advanced product that provides a proven solution for these needs."
