BMC Software's PATROL DB-Unload Dramatically
Decreases Unload Time

BMC Software at IDUG announced that recent tests on BMC Software's PATROL DB-Unload product at the IBM Teraplex Integration Center demonstrated a dramatic 10-to-1 improvement in unload rates for large data warehouses. Speed is essential in unloading data as companies expand distribution of timely business information to a greater number of users throughout their enterprise.
IBM and BMC Software conducted testing on the IBM RS/6000 SP at the IBM Teraplex Integration Center in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., to show how PATROL DB-Unload would speed the data unload process in the IBM DB2(a) Universal Database Enterprise-Extended Edition environment.
In the tests, PATROL DB-Unload demonstrated significant improvements in data unloading in three table sizes, scaling across 20, 200, and 373 million rows. Using PATROL DB-Unload, time for the migration of 373 gigabytes of data decreased from over 16 hours to 95 minutes. The faster time resulted from the PATROL DB-Unload product's ability to access the data directly from the database files and to bypass the overhead of the database engine.
"With the explosion of data that companies collect, analyze and disseminate to an increasing number of business users, database administrators are challenged to find new ways to improve the availability and timeliness of this data," said Ben Barnes, general manager of IBM Global Business Intelligence Solutions. "This test at IBM's Teraplex showed that BMC's PATROL DB-Unload can provide a fast means of extracting data for movement across the enterprise. This will help IT staff provide business users with the most timely business indicators for each workday."
Business intelligence involves the gathering, management and analysis of data for the purpose of turning that data into useful information that is then distributed throughout an enterprise and used for strategic decision making. Companies can make more strategic decisions about which markets to enter, how to select and manage key customer relationships and how to select and effectively promote products, all in an effort to increase profitability and market share. These practices can also reduce operating costs through more effective financial analysis, risk management, fraud management, distribution and logistics management and sales analysis.
Created at a cost of $50 million, the IBM Teraplex Centers allow IBM customers to stress test hardware and software to identify and resolve scalability and functionality issues in a controlled environment before business intelligence systems go into production on site. The Teraplex's proof-of-concept testing ensures that IBM business intelligence hardware and software will integrate with products developed by IBM business partners such as BMC Software, one of IBM's 50 premier business partners worldwide.
"IBM's Teraplex Center provided us with outstanding technical guidance and assistance as well as the computing environment necessary to show how our product offers faster unload times," said Joyce Durst, vice president, Enterprise Data Availability business unit at BMC Software. "Testing indicated that in a production environment where data needs to be moved out of the database, the combination of PATROL DB-Unload and DB2 Universal Database's excellent native load utility can accelerate the distribution of data."
About PATROL DB-Unload
The PATROL DB-Unload product increases DB2 Universal Database availability by performing bulk data unloads significantly faster than the native RDBMS products. It also increases timeliness of data by performing high-speed bulk data unloads, provides the fastest unloads available and enhances flexibility with multiple unload options.
