Simulus Launches SIMperformer for Oracle

Simulus Ltd., the UK-based developer of Predictive Performance Management (PPM) technology, has unveiled its first commercial solution for large enterprise computing systems. SIMperformer for Oracle is a performance management solution based on Simulus' groundbreaking predictive simulation technology, which enables non-intrusive evaluation of future point in time application performance. This solution has been designed specifically to address the generic complexities of applications running on the Oracle RDBMS - the most widely used in the marketplace.

SIMperformer for Oracle enables accurate and cost-effective performance evaluations of applications that either run or are being designed to run on Oracle. For the first time, it brings a predictive capability to every stage of the development and operational lifecycle of Oracle-based systems.

Although Oracle is a thoroughly tested and functionally stable system, offering a great deal of power and flexibility, the size and complexity of typical Oracle data processing environments can result in specific application performance problems. Until now, managing the performance of these environments has proved a major challenge for the majority of large businesses.

The PPM technology that underpins SIMperformer represents a major step forward in systems performance management. Instead of simply monitoring systems and reacting to performance problems as they arise, SIMperformer allows IT managers to optimise resource allocation, assess system development options and guarantee future service levels in a highly accurate virtual environment - without loss of uptime. It is unique in its ability to evaluate performance goals and resource requirements ahead of growth in business workloads and data volumes, and offers considerable cost and time savings when compared to previously available system modelling techniques.

SIM performer for Oracle combines advanced simulation and modelling technologies, intelligent data probes, comprehensive models of both generic Oracle RDBMS behaviours and key infrastructure components (e.g. processing platforms, operating systems and disc architectures), a PPM-optimised model repository, graphical user interface, sophisticated evaluation and reporting tools, and full version control facilities.

Models executed within the Simulus environment are typically configured using data that has been gathered from a target system by intelligent data probes and then imported automatically into the tool. The simulation process involves the execution of millions of events and is capable of producing trace level information that describes the behaviour of a target system. Prior to starting the simulation, measurement probes are selectively enabled to collect appropriate information during the course of the simulation run. This information is then processed and presented back to the user in clear and concise format.

The user is then able to analyse this performance data using the integrated SIMencore module, the powerful post-processor that presents the measurements, exports output data in standard formats and provides report templates.

SIMperformer for Oracle is used in an iterative manner. Having reviewed simulation output, the user may decide that particular parts of the system warrant more detailed examination, and can then choose to modify or refine those areas of the model before running another simulation. This can be achieved simply and effectively via the graphical user interface. The multiple versions of models and associated results produced by such evaluations are managed using the model repository and its comprehensive project management controls.

"As the pace of competition and technological change increases, along with, growing reliance on mission-critical IT systems, the need for predictive solutions has become critical. for the majority of large organisations," explained Tim Waterton, Vice President of Marketing at Simulus.

"SIMperformer for Oracle provides the first cost-effective solution, delivering precise, actionable data in just a few days and allowing the user to carry out sophisticated performance tests in a controlled and timely manner," continued Waterton.

Simulus Ltd. develops innovative performance management solutions for complex, business-critical computer systems. Simulus' groundbreaking Predictive Performance Management (PPM) solutions apply advanced modelling and simulation techniques to domain-specific tools, in a non-intrusive, virtual, desktop-based environment. These solutions extend the scope of traditional performance management activities beyond simply monitoring systems and reacting to information gathered, to enable effective, proactive system planning. Simulus is headquartered in Oxfordshire, United Kingdom, and is an ORACLE Alliance Partner. Additional information is available at: http://www.simulus.com.
