Hitachi Data Systems Announces New VisionBase ESCON Adapter For Data Mining And ERP Applications

Hitachi Data Systems has announced a new VisionBase ESCON adapter that allows Hitachi's powerful and scalable line of VisionBase PC servers to act as very fast co-processors to its Skyline Trinium and Pilot Series enterprise servers.

The VisionBase ESCON adapter provides a high bandwidth, bi-directional connection to mainframe applications and data. The adapter is optimized for LAN gateway consolidation, data warehousing, data mining, and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) server access of mainframe data.

The VisionBase ESCON adapter utilizes the Multi-Path Channel Plus (MPC+) protocol which not only boosts throughput but also significantly lowers mainframe processing cycles. The MPC+ protocol allows for both Systems Network Architecture (SNA) and Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) communication with the mainframe.

"There are no 'islands of information' in a data center today," said Michael Krieger, vice president of PC Servers, Hitachi Data Systems.

"According to META Group, Inc., more than 70 percent of corporate data in the world is still on mainframe systems, and yet the fastest growth in the server market is in PC servers. This ESCON adapter will allow blazing data transfer rates and tightly coupled connections between our Intel and mainframe servers.

"This high-speed access to information for industry standard TCP/IP applications such as SAP R/3, Oracle, BAAN, and PeopleSoft through VisionBase PC servers will make the fact that the data resides on one system or the other completely immaterial."

The VisionBase ESCON adapter comes in a standard Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) form factor. The adapter plugs into the VisionBase PCI bus and provides for connection to the ESCON channel on the mainframe.

The VisionBase ESCON adapter comes with a single CD that allows emulation of the following controller types: 3174, 3172, 3088, and 3480. The VisionBase ESCON adapter can allow the VisionBase system to be a high-speed TCP/IP pass through controller from the mainframe to the network.

Availability

The Hitachi VisionBase ESCON adapter and the Profusion-based VisionBase 8880R eight-way server are available immediately in the Americas, with availability in Europe and Asia Pacific slated for later this year.

VisionBase servers are available through Hitachi Data Systems' value-added resellers (VARs) -- with selected configure-to-order options -- and are fully backed by Hitachi Data Systems' service and support. As part of the service and warranty program, Hitachi Data Systems provides toll-free, 24 by 7 customer support at 1-800-776-6747 or via email at support@hds.com.

Hitachi Data Systems' server management software contains a predictive failure analysis component that will allow users, VARs, or their support organizations to order repair components or dispatch a service technician before a problem causes any "hard" errors.
