Informix Establishes Leadership In TPC-H Decision Support Benchmark On Informix Dynamic Server With Advanced Decision Support Option
Informix Corporation, a technology leader in enterprise database powered solutions, has announced the setting of the leading figure in the 100 GB TPC-H benchmark metric that has recently been established by the Transaction Processing Council. TPC-H has been specified to reflect the ad hoc query performance that is paramount in the decision support setting, and succeeds the now defunct TPC-D benchmark.
"This has been a year of solid growth for Informix in the business intelligence arena," said Bob Walters, vice president, business development, Informix Data Warehousing Division. "This period has seen the establishment of a dedicated business intelligence division, the acquisition of Red Brick, the addition of major customers, and now the setting of a world leading figure in a benchmark that we, our users and partners consider to be the most valuable measure of real-life decision support performance."
This benchmark was run using the 64-bit Informix Dynamic Server with Advanced Decision Support Option (IDS/AD), version 8.3, the company's high-end data warehouse product, on a Sun Enterprise 4500 server, equipped with 12 400MHz UltraSPARC II CPUs, together with the 64-bit Solaris 7 operating environment. This combination delivered a composite query per hour rating of 1280.1 QphH@100GB at a price/performance of $816 per QphH@100GB. The hardware and operating system used in this benchmark are available now. Total system availability is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 1999.
"We believe in delivering the best possible performance, and combined with availability and manageability, we offer the best solutions for our customers," said David Yen, vice president of Sun's Enterprise Server Products Group. "This benchmark illustrates our commitment to that goal, and highlights the superior return on investment that a Sun/Informix decision support solution delivers. We will be working with Informix over the coming months to add to this exceptional price/performance story."
Informix markets two decision support servers. For rapid deployment of single-subject marts on SMP architectures there is the Informix Red Brick Warehouse. For enterprise warehouses, there is Informix Dynamic Server with Advanced Decision Support Option and Extended Parallel Option (IDS/AD/XP), which supports some of the world's largest data warehouses on both SMP and parallel architectures, such as Clusters, NUMA and MPP. The IDS/AD product used for this benchmark was the single node version of IDS/AD/XP that runs on stand-alone SMP systems.
"We plan to demonstrate that Informix is the clear leader in delivering high performance solutions to the business intelligence user," said Diane Fraiman, vice president, corporate marketing, Informix. "The faster our customers get valuable results out of their decision support systems, the more they can extend their competitive advantage. We are embarked on a series of activities between now and the end of the year that will demonstrate our strength in this area, and our unequaled ability to provide our customers with cheaper, faster, smarter decisions."
The Informix Dynamic Server with Advanced Decision Support Option and Extended Parallel Option (IDS/AD/XP) is designed to impose "no ceilings" on demanding, enterprise data warehouse users. Based on a robust shared-nothing, parallel architecture, IDS/AD/XP can accommodate any size of database, any query, any schema design, and management from anywhere through a Web browser. Previous versions of IDS/AD/XP are installed in some of the world's largest and most heavily used data warehouses, and in a range of industries which include finance, retail, manufacturing, transportation, healthcare and government.
