Sheffield Hallam University Uses Latest Management Intelligence Software To Drive Course
Sheffield Hallam University has taken 800 management intelligence (MI) software licenses from Orenburg Ltd. to be used as part of the core data warehousing and data mining curriculum. Running since January 1999, the postgraduate / undergraduate teaching project involves 170 students with full implementation across all courses by December 1999. Orenburg's on-line reporting software was chosen above the more traditional business intelligence software due to its speed and ease of implementation whilst offering high functionality.
Orenburg's MI software, BOARD will be available on 450 workstations throughout the School of Computing and Management Science. The software will allow students to create, maintain and analyse business databases using a multi- dimensional database for extremely fast information analysis. BOARD allows users to build their own libraries of reports, calculation procedures and simulation models that can easily exchange and update data. Without any programming, maintenance is low, enabling a wide range of applications to be developed rapidly, including integrated applications for sales support, group budgeting, consolidation, analysis, simulation and reporting systems.
Professor Frank Poole, head of undergraduate programmes comments: "To teach the data warehousing courses we needed software that was easy to use and flexible. BOARD offers organisations the potential for powerful cost-effective solutions with low end-user training requirements and low application maintenance costs. The software can be used by non-technical managers and directors to analyse business practices, quickly and accurately.
"Being responsible for the direction and management of all computing and management sciences undergraduate programmes, we are continually assessing emerging technologies. Of the ones we reviewed BOARD proved to be eminently suited to our needs. It met all of our requirements and more, which in turn led to our decision to extend the use of BOARD across all the core computing courses offered by Sheffield Hallam."
BOARD is a cost-effective, easy to install application which will alter the way companies of all sizes will conduct business in regards to the analysis of company data and how this data is applied to business strategies.
Pietro Ferrari, client services manager, Orenborg said: "Every day business managers have the task of finding solutions to diverse and largely unpredictable problems. Solutions can't come ready-made, rather they must be formed, modelled and perfected to fit the problem in question. BOARD does precisely this and as an integral part of the curriculum will show students the best way of solving any business problems that may arise in their future working environment."
