NCR BRINGS 'INDUSTRIAL-STRENGTH' DATA WAREHOUSING TO WINDOWS NT ENVIRONMENTS WITH TERADATA MPP VERSION
As part of its continuing commitment to high availability data warehousing, NCR Corporation has announced that its leading-edge Teradata database for the Windows NT operating environment now runs on Massively Parallel Processing (MPP) platforms.
Available around the world for building powerful, portable and open data warehouse solutions, Teradata for Windows NT, version 3.0.1, brings to the Windows NT platform the same high-end capabilities and return on investment that are available in the UNIX environment. This includes the ability to handle complex ad hoc queries and large numbers of concurrent users, as well as featuring ease of administration that maximizes a company's human resources.
Shipping later this quarter, the MPP version of Teradata for Windows NT is the first product to incorporate NCR's patented BYNET technology for NT. BYNET for NT is a scalable interconnect technology that allows customers to build multi-node warehouses. NCR's MPP version of Teradata for Windows NT will also utilize its Administration WorkStation (AWS), which provides a single view of a large enterprise computing system for ease of administration.
In addition, this latest version of Teradata for Windows NT also features an ESCON Channel Connection, a mainframe connection to IBM systems. An ESCON Channel connection offers the best method for a reliable, high-performance connection between an application server and a mainframe computer, and provides a stable foundation for building data warehouse solutions.
The MPP version of Teradata for Windows NT makes reliable, industrial-strength data warehousing on Windows NT viable. Industry analysts have given NCR's Teradata for Windows NT, version 3.0.1, high marks for its powerful combination of price, scalability and field-tested power and performance, especially for companies that are rapidly expanding data warehouse capacity to keep pace with growth.
"By porting Teradata for Windows NT to MPP platforms, companies such as NCR are providing decision support systems that will offer customers the ability to start small with the comfort of growing as big as they need," said Aaron Zornes, executive vice president and director of META Group's Application Delivery Strategies. "These scalable and highly available MPP systems are unique in their ability to handle complex queries from many concurrent users in an enterprise data warehouse environment."
"The MPP version of Teradata for Windows NT allows companies to leverage the industry-leading data warehouse engine and the Windows NT platform - no matter what the size of the data warehouse is, or how the business needs to grow," said Vickie Farrell, assistant vice president of Teradata Marketing at NCR. "It is a combination that is unique in its ability to support serious data warehousing on NT."
Companies that are already successfully using NCR's Teradata for Windows NT on a single node, include Synectics Solutions, a leading data analysis services provider in the United Kingdom, and Granahorrar, one of the largest savings and loan institutions in Colombia.
Synectics was one of the first users of the SMP (symmetric multi-processing) version of Teradata for Windows NT and has also been a beta site for the MPP version. Using the Teradata for Windows NT database, Synectics outperforms competitors because the company is able to dramatically scale up warehouse capacity to more quickly deliver unique reports and analyses to its very demanding customers.
Synectics' global client roster for its database services includes leading organizations such as Rover Group, J.D. Williams Co., and the U.K. Audit Commission. These organizations demand solutions that incorporate complex and innovative uses for the kind of processing, analytical and predictive applications that a Teradata Warehouse can easily handle in a Windows NT environment, with minimal DBA (database administrator) requirements.
As a leading financial institution in Colombia, Granahorrar wanted to better understand and service its large customer base by being able to segment those customers to market specific products and services. Granahorrar turned to an NCR data warehouse running the SMP version of Teradata for Windows NT to help it do just that - and expand its business in the process.
Available on NCR's WorldMark platform, the MPP version of Teradata for Windows NT is priced identical to NCR's UNIX version of Teradata. MPP pricing begins at $50,000 for a single node MPP system. And, to help ensure ongoing system availability, NCR offers its Enterprise System Support (ESS) services to enable customers to utilize the Teradata database for effective, time-sensitive decision-making.
