LEADING INDUSTRY EXPERT WILL JOIN NCR AS CTO OF DATA WAREHOUSE BUSINESS

Stephen Brobst, president and founder of Strategic Technologies and Systems, will join NCR Corporation as chief technology officer of its data warehouse business.

NCR has signed a definitive agreement to acquire new CTO's privately-held, Boston-based company, a specialized consulting firm that focuses on high-end database design and construction, specifically in the area of sophisticated data warehouses.

Brobst, widely regarded as the foremost expert in data warehousing, will serve as chief technology officer of NCR's Teradata Solutions Group, formerly known as the National Accounts Solutions Group, reporting to Senior Vice President Mark Hurd. The division develops and markets NCR's data warehouse solutions, including hardware, Teradata database, application software, professional services and customer support, across all the industries served by the company.

"Stephen is widely recognized as the authority on data warehousing," said Lars Nyberg, chairman and CEO of NCR. "His addition, along with his staff of 10, represent a best-in-class consulting organization which will strengthen our overall data warehouse position. This is another example of our commitment to growth and leadership in this space."

Strategic Technologies and Systems is known for its expertise in implementing high-end data warehouses, for major corporations such as Fidelity Investments and Office Depot, and an in-depth knowledge of the Teradata technology -- acknowledged by leading industry analysts as the superior data warehouse platform. The company focuses a significant part of its data warehouse consulting on the insurance and health care industries.

"NCR has made no secret of the vital role that data warehousing plays in the company's overall strategy," said Brobst. "This acquisition is an excellent strategic fit, and I'm personally excited about contributing to the future growth and success of NCR's data warehouse business."

After the acquisition, the company will remain as a separate unit of the Teradata Solutions Group of NCR.

The agreement to retain Brobst and to acquire Strategic Technologies and Systems is the latest in a recent string of activity that has also seen NCR expand its data warehousing presence in the e-business area, with the October 4 announcement of a $52.5 million agreement with MicroStrategy Incorporated. The agreement enables NCR to incorporate MicroStrategy's ebusiness software into its customer relationship management and Teradata products, allowing companies to develop web-enabled data warehouse solutions for electronic commerce.

The deal also calls for NCR's Teradata warehouse to power MicroStrategy's Strategy.com network that delivers personalized information to individuals via e-mail, pager, fax, mobile phone, telephone and personal digital assistant.
