Gelato Federation Announces New Members At Stockholm Meeting
Five new institutional members were introduced at the October meeting of the
Gelato Federation Strategy Council in Stockholm, Sweden. The open-source
Linux-on-Itanium consortium now comprises 23 prestigious universities,
national laboratories and research installations from around the world,
including Europe, Asia, Australia, North America, South America and Latin
America.
The new Federation members are:
- The Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil) hosts
centers in Software Testing and High-Performance Computing with
Hewlett-Packard Brazil, and focuses on cluster resource management and
monitoring, benchmarking, heterogeneous clusters (including Itanium), HPC
applications on multiprocessors and clusters, clusters of clusters, Grids, OS
scalability on multiprocessor architectures, statistical software testing and
reliability estimation.
- The University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez is Puerto Rico's leading research
institution. The Parallel and Distributed Computing Laboratory performs
research in the design, implementation and efficiency measurements of parallel
algorithms and in parallel and distributed computing systems, with an emphasis
on high-performance cluster and Grid computing.
- Fudan University, headquartered in Shanghai, is one of China's top
universities and is fast developing an international reputation for excellence
as a research institution. Fudan is a comprehensive university with 17
academic schools and 45 national key disciplines. The campus also houses five
national laboratories, 57 institutes and 80 research centers.
- Georgia Institute of Technology is one of the United States' top research
universities. The Center for Experimental Research in Computer Systems (CERCS)
combines experts from Computing and Electrical and Computer Engineering
colleges to focus on the design and evaluation of computer and software
systems; complex systems such as hardware, communications and system-level
software; and applications. CERCS is an NSF Industry/University Cooperative
Research Center.
- Zhejiang University, one of China's leading institutions, houses 21
colleges, including the College of Computer Science (CS) and the Center for
Engineering and Scientific Computation (CESC). CS research spans computer
science and engineering, digital media and network technology. A scalable
information Grid is underway to enable large-scale data sharing and
coordination of massively parallel processing. CESC promotes high-performance
computing applications with software environments for computational Grids for
simulation and visualization of large-scale multidisciplinary applications.
"We are very excited about the new Gelato members," said Mark K. Smith,
Gelato's managing director. "They bring expertise to the Federation in the
areas of box scalability, data-centric computing and Grid computing. Together
with the other Federation members, Gelato is developing into a strong
organization that will help accelerate the adoption of the Linux Itanium
platform."
Gelato members now hail from Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Denmark,
France, Germany, Puerto Rico, Russia, Singapore, Sweden, Switzerland and the
United States. A complete list is at
