Cluster Computing:

APPLE INTROS WORKGROUP CLUSTER FOR BIOINFORMATICS AWARD

The Apple Workgroup Cluster for Bioinformatics makes it easy for scientists to harness the immense power of computational clusters. Now, Apple is seeking five of America’s most important, innovative and visionary scientific research projects that would benefit from a turnkey, high-performance computational cluster.

Through a formal call for applications, Apple will award five fully- provisioned, all-inclusive Apple Workgroup Clusters for Bioinformatics to five scientific researchers in the United States. A panel of distinguished scientists will help Apple review and select the five best applications. The recipients will be announced at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) on June 29, 2004. The application deadline is midnight PDT on June 13, 2004, per the Terms and Conditions of this program.

Often referred to as "cluster computing on steroids," Grid computing is for real. Web services, utility computing, .NET, CPU harvesting and distributed computing are just a few of the technologies that fall under the Grid computing umbrella. Gt04 -- a premiere enterprise Grid computing conference targeting industrial and commercial users -- will gather experts, and outline strategies and road maps for Grid deployment. Whether it’s the PowerBook G4 for UNIX to go, the Power Mac G5 for serious computational horsepower on your desktop or the immense power and scalability of Xserve, Apple products and solutions are designed with scientists in mind. The Apple Workgroup Cluster for Bioinformatics provides a platform for scientific success with the flexibility and ease of use you’ve come to expect from Apple.

Panel of Application Judges

  • Erik Lindahl, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Stockholm Bioinformatics Center, Stockholm University
  • Michael Athanas, Ph.D., Principal, The BioTeam, Inc.
  • William van Etten, Ph.D., Principal, The BioTeam, Inc.
  • Elizabeth Kerr, Ph.D., Director, Science and Technology Markets, Apple Computer, Inc.
  • Robert Kehrer, Partnership Manager, Apple Computer, Inc.
  • Matt MacInnis, Research and HPC Manager, Apple Computer, Inc.
  • Pear Urushima, Manager, Science and Technology Markets, Apple Computer, Inc.

The panel will select the best applications based on the applicant’s scientific record, the likelihood that this project will discover something novel using the award and the likelihood that this research focus would yield methods or discoveries applicable to the broader life science community.

Award List

Each recipient will receive a 4-node Apple Workgroup Cluster, including:

  • Four dual-processor Xserve G5s with 2GB RAM
  • BioTeam iNquiry, including 200 pre-installed bioinformatics applications
  • XtremeMac Xrack Pro sound-suppressing enclosure
  • APC Smart-UPS 2200 VA power supply
  • Asanté GX5-800 Gigabit Ethernet switch
