Features:APAC ISSUES REQUEST FOR PROPOSALS, REAPPOINTS CALLAGHANThe Australian Partnership for Advanced Computing has issued a request for proposals for the supply of a peak computing system and associated services for the APAC National Facility at the Australian National University. The closing time and date for proposals is 2.00pm AEST, Wednesday 1 September 2004. In addition, the APAC Board has announced the re-appointment of Professor John O'Callaghan as Executive Director until December 2006. In making the announcement, the Chair of the APAC Board said that John O' Callaghan had made significant contributions to the success of APAC and to the plans for the current stage of APAC. He added that, "As Executive Director, John will continue to play a leading role in the development of Australia's research infrastructure". He commented that APAC is now a significant national player in the computing and information infrastructure for eResearch in Australia. Professor John O'CallaghanJohn has had a distinguished career in the area of information technology. He is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering. Last year, was awarded the Centenary Medal 'for services to Australian society in computer science and technology'. Also last year, he was awarded membership of the Pearcey Hall of Fame for contributions to the Australian IT profession, joining 12 other Australians to have received this award. As a result of this extension, John has decided to resign from CSIRO after 35 years service and accept a professorial position the Australian National University. |
