Short Takes - People & Positions:FRAN BERMAN APPOINTED TO NAT'L ADVISORY MED SCIENCES COUNCILDr. Francine Berman, director of the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) has been appointed to the National Advisory General Medical Sciences Council. The council, which meets three times a year, is composed of leaders in the biological and medical sciences, education, health care and public affairs. During Dr. Berman's four-year term, she will perform the second level of peer review for research and research training grant applications assigned to the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS), one of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). She will also offer advice and recommendations on policy and program development, program implementation, evaluation and other matters of significance to the mission and goals of NIGMS. A pioneer of grid computing, Dr. Berman was appointed the first holder of the Endowed Chair in High Performance Computing at UCSD's Jacobs School of Engineering where she also serves as Professor of Computer Science and Engineering. Berman earned a B.A. in mathematics from the University of California, Los Angeles, and an M.A. and Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Washington in Seattle, and has been recognized as one of the top women in technology by BusinessWeek and IEEE Spectrum. The National Institutes of Health is one of the public health service agencies under the Department of Health and Human Services. NIGMS, one of the institutes within NIH, funds research and research training in the basic biomedical sciences. This support enables scientists at universities, medical schools and research institutions to expand knowledge about the fundamental life processes that underlie human health and disease. SGI NAMES PHILIPPE MILTIN VICE PRESIDENT OF EMEA REGIONSilicon Graphics announced it has named Philippe Miltin vice president of its Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region. In his new role, Miltin, who previously was regional general manager for Southern Europe at SGI, will oversee day-to-day operations throughout EMEA. In a long-planned organizational restructuring, the company also announced that SGI's previous senior vice president of EMEA, Steve Coggins, will assume the role of chairman for SGI EMEA. Miltin, who has more than 20 years experience in the IT sector, joined SGI in 1993 to develop the channel organization in the French subsidiary, where he aided the growth of revenue in a substantial manner. In 1999, Miltin became the general manager in France. He later assumed responsibility for the entire Southern European region. Prior to joining SGI, Milton held sales positions at Dell, Altos and Rank Xerox. Coggins joined SGI in 2001 as senior vice president of EMEA. Having spent more than 30 years in the IT sector, Coggins began his career at British Aircraft Corp. where he worked on development of the Concorde, and later held engineering and development positions at IBM. Coggins joined start-up Amdahl Corporation in 1977, helping to grow the company into a market leader and eventually serving as senior vice president and general manager for Amdahl Europe. VISUAL NUMERICS PROMOTES PHILIP FRAHER TO PRESIDENT AND CEOVisual Numerics, Inc., a leading provider of numerical analysis and visualization software, announced that Philip Fraher has been promoted to president and chief executive officer of the company. Prior to this new appointment, Fraher was the chief operating officer for Visual Numerics during a period of significant growth and expansion. Under Fraher's direction, Visual Numerics expanded its consulting business to focus on providing new analytic solutions for mainstream business users. Recent customer applications include forecasting, portfolio optimization, compensation modeling and predictive cost analytics. In addition, the company formed strategic channel partnerships in Japan and Australia to provide an even stronger foothold in those regions and further solidify the company's worldwide distribution. In 2004, Fraher was invited to serve on the Industry Advisory Committee (IAC) of the Supercomputing conference for high performance computing, networking and storage, one of the most highly regarded international conferences in the industry. Fraher represents the only independent software vendor and has led in Visual Numerics' support of a new SC¦05 committee, HPC Analytics, which promotes the convergence of high-end analytics and visualization techniques in the high performance computing arena. Additionally, under Fraher's leadership, Visual Numerics has had eight product releases in the past two years. These launches include a first-of-its-kind numerical library for Microsoft .NET users and a highly advanced neural network forecasting package, written in 100% Java, for predictive analytics in data mining applications. These product enhancements and new releases underscore the company's commitment to providing the most advanced analytic capabilities for business and scientific use and has helped provide key revenue growth for Visual Numerics in new and emerging markets. HP APPOINTS GLOBAL IT OUTSOURCING EXECUTIVE TO LEAD MANAGED SERVICES BUSINESSHP announced that Steve Smith has been named senior vice president of Managed Services within HP Services. HP's Managed Services organization provides companies with outsourcing services and solutions to manage their IT infrastructures. It also provides business process outsourcing capabilities. Smith replaces Uli Holdenried, who recently became managing director of HP Germany. Smith brings extensive global IT services and outsourcing management expertise to his new position at HP, having served most recently as vice president of Global Professional and Managed Services at Lucent Technologies. At Lucent, he was responsible for leading the company's initiative to become the leading network consulting and integrator worldwide. Previous to that, Smith worked for 16 years at Electronic Data Systems, where he led the company's global sales force and held a number of senior management roles throughout the Pacific Rim, including serving as president of Asia Pacific and also as president of the western United States. HP Managed Services is the fastest-growing business within HP, up 38 percent year over year in fiscal year 2004 - more than four times the market average. Smith reports to Ann Livermore, executive vice president of the Technology Solutions Group at HP. CONCURRENT APPOINTS NEW CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICERConcurrent Computer Corporation announced the appointment of Greg Wilson as its Chief Financial Officer effective Jan. 24, 2005. Mr. Wilson has served as the company's Corporate Controller reporting to Steve Norton, the current Chief Financial Officer, since February of 2000. Prior to joining Concurrent, Mr. Wilson served as the Manager of Financial Planning and Analysis at LHS Group Inc., a publicly traded global provider of operating support system software and services to the communications industry. Mr. Wilson has over 13 years of public company accounting experience with Concurrent, LHS, Turner Broadcasting and Oppenheimer Capital where his financial responsibilities included internal financial reporting, quarterly and annual filings with the SEC, Sarbanes-Oxley 404 compliance, and financial planning and analysis. Mr. Wilson will replace Steve Norton who has accepted the position of Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer at a NASDAQ traded technology company. FALCONSTOR SOFTWARE ELECTS STEVEN L. BOCK TO BOARD OF DIRECTORSFalconStor Software, Inc., a leading developer of network storage software solutions, announced that Steven L. Bock, CEO of Unger Software Corporation, a leading provider of financial planning and profiling software for advisors and other finance industry professionals, has been elected to FalconStor's Board of Directors, bringing a wealth of first hand business, management and financial experience and expertise to the company. Bock's business and management accomplishments in a wide range of industries will add valuable insight to the FalconStor Software Board and management team as it executes on the company's mission and vision of delivering innovative network storage software solutions. Bock's career includes executive management positions in a variety of industries. Prior to joining Unger Software, Bock was a consultant to early- stage companies, and served as a Director and Interim Chief Operating Officer of B2B Video Network, a company that operated a secure, reliable business-to- business video network to deliver essential business programming to the desktops of business users throughout the world. From 1990 through 2000, he was Chairman, Chief Executive Officer and President of Specialty Catalog Corp., a direct marketer targeting niche consumer product categories through a variety of catalogs and E-commerce web sites. Bock has also been an officer at investment holding and management firms, and a partner of a law firm. Bock holds a B.S. from the State University of New York at Albany, and a J.D. from Harvard Law School. |
