Tabor Communications Selects Addison Snell As Vice President and General Manager of Tabor Research

News Release: Tabor Research

HPC Industry Veteran and Former IDC Analyst to Lead New HPC Market Research Group

SAN DIEGO — February 13, 2007 — Tabor Communications Inc., a leading provider of strategy, information and solutions for High Productivity Computing (HPC) communities, today announced it has selected ten-year HPC industry veteran and former IDC analyst Addison Snell to head the company’s recently formed independent market research and consulting advisory practice, Tabor Research. As vice president and general manager of Tabor Research, Snell will report to Debra Goldfarb, CEO of Tabor Communications.

Snell, a graduate of the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University, has 10 years of HPC industry experience. He joins Tabor Research from IDC where he was well-known among HPC industry stakeholders as a technical computing systems analyst. Prior to IDC, Snell gained recognition as a spokesperson for SGI’s supercomputing products and strategy.

“Bringing Addison on board to lead the team at Tabor Research is tremendous,” said Goldfarb. “Addison clearly understands the gap that currently exists in HPC market intelligence, and under his leadership we will ensure our research products deliver actionable market intelligence based on a complete view of forward-looking trends.”

Differentiating itself from other research and advisory practices, Tabor Research leverages the company’s impressive database developed from 20 years of HPC publications experience and a senior staff that boasts a combined HPC experience level of more than 100 years.

“Our number-one goal at Tabor Research is to give our clients data and advice that is actionable,” says Snell. “Everyone is dealing with limited resources. For market intelligence to be worthwhile, it has to provide a way for the recipient to make more informed decisions about its strategy and investments.”

To achieve his goals, Snell says he will exploit synergies between Tabor Research and its two sister companies, Tabor Publications and Events and Tabor Marketing Services.

“This is a terrific opportunity to change the way market research is done,” explains Snell. “Previously, market intelligence mostly meant surveying the vendors about what they’ve sold, and the users would be passive recipients of rear-view-mirror, supply-side data. This is great for providing current snapshots of items like market share, but it doesn’t give the user a voice in determining the future of HPC.”

“The trendsetters in the HPC user community all read HPCwire,” continues Snell. “Tabor Research will give those users a voice that will reach throughout the vendor community – platform vendors, application vendors, middleware vendors, storage vendors – and set the direction of product development. It’s better for users, and it’s better for vendors. Tabor Research can facilitate a change in the industry by providing market intelligence that delivers a tangible return on investment.”

Snell also notes a need to focus research outside the base server platform, based on the industry’s adoption of clustered architectures.

“Differentiation used to come almost exclusively from technology inside the box,” says Snell. “Now you need to understand trends in interconnects, file systems, tools, programming models… There’s so much more to the picture. The industry has changed. Market intelligence needs to change with it.”

Goldfarb added, “Unlike any other organization, our team is uniquely positioned to deliver strategic counsel based on a keen understanding of the HPC community and the supporting global ecosystem, with a particular emphasis on the changing dynamics of the HPC industry as a whole.”

Under Snell’s leadership, Tabor Research will integrate supplier and user data in a forward-looking market intelligence subscription service called InterSect360 ™. Tabor Research will also conduct frequent comprehensive research studies in topics of interest to the HPC community, along with offering a range of client-specific services, including perception surveys, white papers, and go-to-market consulting advisory services.

Snell can be reached at Addison@TaborResearch.com.
