Accelrys Announces Three-Year Agreement With Compaq To Accelerate Materials Research

SAN DIEGO, CA, January 23, 2002 - Accelrys Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Pharmacopeia, Inc. (Nasdaq: PCOP) today announced an agreement with Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE: CPQ) to deliver Accelrys' industry-leading materials research software on Compaq's Tru64 UNIX operating system running on Compaq's AlphaServer platform. This relationship will provide Accelrys' leading set of predictive tools for researchers in the chemicals process industry on a leading high performance platform, and will provide increased productivity and shorter time to discovery for researchers.

Key elements of the agreement include joint collaboration to deliver Materials Studio 2.0 server codes running Tru64 UNIX on the AlphaServer platform and on industry-standard Compaq ProLiant servers running Linux; Materials Studio 2.0 client codes on Evo workstations running Windows; support for a comprehensive optimization and quality assurance program for the software, and a joint worldwide marketing and sales program.

"Part of Compaq's business philosophy is to undertake agreements with the best-of-breed software developers and providers, and this agreement with Accelrys exemplifies our commitment to the high-performance technical computing sector -- specifically to the materials sciences segment," said Bill Blake, vice president of High Performance Technical Computing at Compaq. "I'm delighted that Accelrys' Materials Studio, with its superb materials science modeling software, is now available on the Tru64 UNIX operating system."

"Compaq's Tru64 UNIX operating system enjoys a leadership position in the high performance technical computing, Internet, and telecommunications markets," says Dr Michael Stapleton, COO of Accelrys. "Both Compaq and Accelrys have long-term commitments to deliver quality products and services, bringing real advantages to our customers by creating integrated solutions and industry-wide standards. I believe that this agreement will bring Accelrys closer to that goal."

Materials Studio 2.0 is a client-server package offering a comprehensive suite of tools to predict key properties and processes related to organic crystalline materials (including fine chemicals, pigments, dyes, and drugs), inorganic materials (including catalysts, metals, and ceramics), and polymeric materials. The primary market for this technology is product discovery and process development in the chemicals industry. Materials Studio 2.0 servers are now supported on Compaq Tru64 UNIX V4.0F and above, as well as on Windows NT 4.0, 2000, XP, RedHat LINUX 6.0 and above, and IRIX 6.5.4 and above. Materials Studio 2.0 client applications are supported on Windows NT 4.0, 2000 and XP. There are already several installations worldwide of Materials Studio 2.0 running on Compaq's Tru64 UNIX environment on AlphaServer systems.

The Compaq Tru64 UNIX operating system with its innovative TruCluster software running on powerful AlphaServer systems is a proven, highly reliable platform for integrated solutions that deliver continuous competitive advantages to Compaq customers. The AlphaServer family of products starts from single processor workstations and servers to the multiple thousands of processors in the largest AlphaServer SC systems, such as the six TerOPS Terascale Supercomputing System at the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center. Additionally, for those customers with mixed environments, Compaq provides the tools and services to integrate Windows, Linux, and UNIX environments with Tru64 UNIX enterprise solutions.
