SGI/Cray Research

Cray Research, the supercomputing subsidiary of Silicon Graphics Inc., has been the worldwide leader in supercomputing for nearly a quarter of a century. Silicon Graphics/Cray's mission is to provide science, industry, academia and business with powerful supercomputing tools for solving the world's most challenging problems. Silicon Graphics/Cray Research stands alone in its abilities to meld world-class simulation, visualization and data management capabilities aimed at leading-edge applications. These applications -- such as virtual prototyping and design, virtual manufacturing and process design, real-time reservoir modeling and ensemble weather forecasting -- require interactive visual supercomputing that allows users to 'steer' through very high resolution graphics and huge volume data management.

From Wall Street analysts and auto part designers to university researchers, climatologists, and defense scientists, users throughout the world rely on high-performance computing solutions from Silicon Graphics/Cray to solve their most challenging problems.

Category Leaders

In the high-performance computing marketplace, customers can choose from Silicon Graphics/Cray's broad range of products covering a full spectrum of architectures based on the best fit-to-application. Each Silicon Graphics/Cray system today is the category leader in their class of computing.

S2MP, the Industry-Leading ccNUMA Architecture The Origin2000(TM) family of cc-NUMA systems addresses the market for shared-memory scalability up to 128 processors. It is based on Silicon Graphics/Cray's S2MP(TM) architecture, a ccNUMA-based distributed shared-memory system that is the first to combine high scaling efficiency with a simple shared-memory programming model. Incorporating high speed point-to-point interconnect technology, this architecture also offers tremendous flexibility and an incremental purchasing model that is unprecedented in large scale scientific computing systems. It is an excellent system for mainstream applications in the sciences and engineering, commercial applications such as database and intranet servers, as well as offering the possibility of integrated graphics and visualization. A wide variety of third-party applications is already certified, with more being added daily.

The revolutionary CRAY(R) Origin2000(TM) system is designed for customers with requirements for scalable solutions on mainstream, third-party technical, commercial and visualization applications up to 128 processors. The CRAY Origin2000 system is based on the Scalable Shared-memory MultiProcessing (S2MP) architecture, the industry's most advanced ccNUMA architecture.

Distributed Memory Scalable Parallel

The recently introduced CRAY T3E-1200(TM) Series of supercomputers is the only production supercomputer product capable of demonstrating a teraflops (one trillion operations per second) of sustained performance. Well suited for customers in the environmental, petroleum, university research, government and aerospace markets, the CRAY T3E-1200 system includes a 600 MHz processor and outstanding price/performance. The CRAY T3E series is the world's best selling line of scalable parallel supercomputers.

Vector Architecture

The CRAY T90(TM) Series incorporates the latest advances in parallel-vector supercomputer technology. The CRAY T90 systems, the best-selling vector SMP products on the planet, employ an array of innovative technologies, including pioneering connectors that eliminate internal wiring. The series includes three models capable of handling large, mission-critical jobs. With up to 32 high-speed vector processors and 8 gigabytes of shared-memory, the CRAY T90 Series systems are ideally suited to serve as enterprise- wide resources for the most demanding supercomputing problems and workloads.

The CRAY J90(TM) Series is ideal for organizations that have complex computing needs, but don't require the highest-end systems. The CRAY J90 supercomputers are scaled-down versions of Cray's extreme- performance vector supercomputers and are aimed at small to mid-sized organizations and departments within large organizations. CRAY J90 systems are air-cooled and easily fit into any office environment.

Software

All Silicon Graphics/Cray systems are designed to support the open-systems standard and run the high-end operating systems UNICOS(R) and UNICOS/mk(TM), which scales to thousand of processors, or IRIX(TM). Silicon Graphics/Cray's supercomputing software products, such as sophisticated tape management systems, network load balancing software, and scientific libraries for applications building are a must for the demands of high-end supercomputing customers.
