SDSC's 250 staff members have expertise in computational science research and the development and integration of high-performance computing technologies. The scientific staff specializes in biology, biomedicine, bioinformatics, chemistry, and environmental sciences. Technology researchers focus on scalable parallel and distributed computing, data-intensive computing, applied network research, scientific visualization, and security. Support staff develop and maintain systems and application software, provide researcher and operations support, conduct training, develop user documentation, and publish information about current projects.Over 50 commercial, government, and private organizations are members of SDSC's Science and Technology Outreach Program. These memberships can be a cost-effective and practical way for U.S. industry to embrace high-performance computing for engineering, design, and research. Membership includes access to all of the center's resources, including a vast information repository holding scientific databases, high-performance computers, a large inventory of applications packages, a world-class scientific visualization laboratory, and, most importantly, the opportunity to work with the center's research scientists.

Each partnership tailors an organization's needs with a specific mix of the center's resources with specialized training, education, and joint collaboration on specific projects. SDSC is interested in developing long-term collaborative relationships with industry on research projects of mutual interest. To maximize the use of SDSC's resources, Science and Technology Outreach partners are encouraged to obtain a high-speed connection to the Internet. Such a connection supports remote communications access to SDSC's supercomputers and information repositories. It also provides access to the ever-growing world of information being added to the Internet daily.
